Are you unhappy in your career or even your personal life? Does every day feels like Monday? Do you spend the weekend dreading the next week? Or maybe you have always wanted to learn something, try something, go back to school or have a different career. It’s time to make some goals! You will be amazed at how knowing a situation you dislike is temporary will make you feel better, lighter and happier. Goals are the cure for unhappiness – goals give you wings! You need only to Dream, Believe and Act.
You know what you have been dreaming about, but have you tried to live it in your mind? Make it more real and try to feel it. Take a moment to visualize what it would feel like to achieve your goals. Does it feel good? Are you excited? You should be! You are on your way. This is an important step because belief breathes life into your dreams. You can’t achieve a dream you don’t believe in. If you feel the dream in your gut, you are right. Give your goals the S.M.A.R.T. test to make sure they are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-based. (If you are not familiar with this, a quick internet search will yield several good explanations.) Don’t let others dissuade you. Consider whether you can tell others or not. Not everyone will understand your dreams, so be careful with whom you share them. Think of your dreams as a baby that must be protected. There are people you are quite fond of or that may love you but you wouldn’t trust to care for your baby because they just don’t know how to care for an infant. Think of your dream that way and protect it from those with that would bring negative energy to it. Negative energy is to a dream as kryptonite is to Superman!
The next thing you need to do is figure out what it would take to make your dream happen. Write it all down. For each thing that has to happen, break it down into smaller steps. Continue this until you know the steps you need to take daily to reach your goals. This not only gives you a roadmap for your desires but allows you to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Give yourself a specific time every day to work towards your goal. Set a reminder on your cell phone. Choose a time when you know you can work without interruption. During this daily time, again take a few moments to visualize how it will feel to achieve your dream. This is the heart of achievement. Keep the original list so you can see your progress. As you accomplish something, check it off the list. Don’t forget to celebrate your progress!
Weekly and monthly take the time to assess where you are, what you must do and make adjustments. Keep at it and don’t give up. Knowing the situation you aren’t happy with will soon come to an end gives you strength to look past a negative situation and focus positively on the future. Positive focus makes you happier positively! And isn’t life too short to be unhappy? Goals give you wings — so go ahead and soar!
